MicroTraffic is a leading provider of microscopic traffic data for road safety engineers. Our technology is based on computer vision, video analytics, machine learning, predictive modelling, and the safe systems philosophy. We assist engineers to apply surrogate safety methods for proactive decision making. We produce conflict reports for individual traffic safety studies and also offer a proactive road safety network screening service.

How to use Road Safety Video Analytics by MicroTraffic

There are four primary ways to use road safety video analytics by MicroTraffic:

  • Network-scale video analytics for proactive road safety diagnostics and planning

  • Before-after studies in road safety with video conflict analysis

  • In-service road safety reviews with video conflict analysis

  • Road safety investigations at conceptual or preliminary design stage

For each use case, we can work with video you send to us or arrange video collection for you.  Each use case is outlined below.

Network Scale Video Analytics for Proactive Road Safety Diagnostics and Planning

Imagine building your road safety program using a high-resolution understanding of risks in your road network. With this understanding, you can answer questions such as:

  • Which intersections are most prone to severe near-misses?

  • Which types of near-misses are most common?

  • Which systemic and localized interventions should we invest in?

  • Which treatments will address the root causes of road safety risks?

  • Does the magnitude of the problem justify the treatment being considered?

With our network scale conflict reporting, you can develop a high-resolution understanding of risks in your road network. MicroTraffic’s video conflict analysis can help you understand the frequency and severity of more than 160 conflict types, as well as how this varies dynamically with time of day, signal phasing, geometry, speeds, traffic volumes, and turning movements. All of this information is stored in a machine-readable database with interactive mapping, reporting, and analytic functions.

Network scale conflict reporting provided by MicroTraffic gives you a knowledge-base for proactive safety planning. You can scan through your network for near-misses, creating the best strategies to stop fatalities before they happen. Before-after road safety studies with video conflict analysis

The collision modification factor (CMF) clearinghouse has results from more than 5000 studies on the effectiveness of various road safety interventions. However, there remains a huge need to continue investigating the effectiveness of road safety interventions for the following reasons:

  • Many treatments do not yet have a CMF

  • Innovative treatments (including ones only at idea stage) do not yet have a CMF

  • CMFs in the clearinghouse may have come from a non-relevant context

  • Key decision makers want good evidence before deploying a treatment past the pilot stage

Historically, collision modification factors could take a long time to develop. Due to low sample sizes of collisions, many sites and many years of data were traditionally required. With video conflict analysis by MicroTraffic, changes in near-misses can be observed and quantitatively measured in a matter of days. You can determine the effectiveness of a treatment and decide if continued or wider deployment is warranted.

In-service road safety reviews with video conflict analysis

An in-service road safety review is an in-depth engineering study of an existing facility to diagnose key issues and to identify cost-effective short-term and long-term treatments. This type of study is generally done in response to safety concerns that have been raised or in response to a network screening study that identified the most collision-prone locations. A MicroTraffic conflict report using video conflict analysis can help engineers perform diagnostics when conducting in-service road safety reviews.

Road safety investigations at conceptual or preliminary design stage with video conflict analysis

For projects involving the rehabilitation or reconstruction of an existing corridor, video conflict analysis by MicroTraffic during the conceptual or preliminary design stage can help ensure safety issues are caught and addressed. Traditionally, review of existing collision data is completed at these stages. A conflict analysis provides a much more thorough and reliable lens for risk diagnostics. The project manager or designer can use the conflict analysis to help scope the project to ensure it takes advantage of timely opportunities to improve road safety.
