Before-after road safety studies with video conflict analysis

The collision modification factor (CMF) clearinghouse has results from more than 5000 studies on the effectiveness of various road safety interventions. However, there remains a huge need to continue investigating the effectiveness of road safety interventions for the following reasons:

  • Many treatments do not yet have a CMF

  • Innovative treatments (including ones only at idea stage) do not yet have a CMF

  • CMFs in the clearinghouse may have come from a non-relevant context

  • Key decision makers want good evidence before deploying a treatment past the pilot stage

Historically, collision modification factors could take a long time to develop. Due to low sample sizes of collisions, many sites and many years of data were traditionally required.
